Buying guide
What paperwork do I need to buy a motorcycle in Mauritius?
Make sure the registration book (horse-power certificate) is in the seller's name with a valid fitness certificate, and confirm there is no outstanding finance on the bike. Ownership transfer is done at the NTA — bring both IDs and a declaration of sale, and keep a signed copy of everything.
What should I check on a used scooter or bike?
Start it from cold and listen for knocking, check the frame and forks are straight, and look for oil leaks. Inspect tyres, brakes, chain or belt, and all the lights and electrics. Compare the mileage against the wear on the grips and seat, and take a short test ride if the seller allows.
What licence and gear do I need to ride in Mauritius?
You need the correct motorcycle licence category for the engine size, and a helmet is mandatory by law for rider and passenger. Third-party insurance is required before you ride. For a first bike, many riders start on a 50–125cc scooter for the lower running costs and easier handling.
