How do I test a second-hand console before paying?
Ask the seller to plug it in. Start a game from a disc and one from the storage, play for a few minutes and listen for a loud fan. Test every controller: sticks that drift, buttons that stick, and whether it charges. Check the HDMI port and that the console connects to Wi-Fi.
How do I make sure the console is not locked or banned?
Have the seller sign out of their account and reset the console in front of you, then sign in to the online store with your own account. A console that cannot reach the PlayStation, Nintendo or Xbox store may be banned from online play — walk away.
PS4 or PS5 second-hand?
A used PS4 costs a fraction of a PS5 and has a huge, cheap second-hand game library — the sensible choice for casual play and kids. The PS5 runs the newest games, loads far faster and plays PS4 discs too (on the disc edition), so it is the better buy if you plan to keep it for years.
