Buying guide

How do I check a second-hand bicycle before buying?

Ride it. Shift through every gear, brake hard with each lever and listen for creaks from the cranks and headset. Look along the frame for cracks or dents, especially around the welds, and spin the wheels to see whether they wobble. Worn tyres, chain and brake pads are cheap to replace; a bent frame or fork is not.

What size bike do I need?

Frame size matters more than brand. Standing over the top tube you should have a few centimetres of clearance, and seated you should reach the handlebars without locking your elbows. Adult mountain bikes are usually sold by wheel size (26", 27.5", 29") and frame size (S, M, L); kids bikes by wheel size (12" to 24"). Ask the seller for both before travelling.

Is second-hand gym equipment worth it?

Weights, benches and racks barely wear out, so second-hand is almost always the smart buy. For treadmills, exercise bikes and ellipticals, run the machine for several minutes at different speeds: the belt should not slip or drift, the motor should not smell hot, and the console should respond. Plan the transport — these machines are heavy.

What should I look at on used surf or kite gear?

On a board, press around the rails and deck for soft spots and look for cracks that let water in. On a kite, inflate it and leave it a few minutes to check it holds pressure, then inspect the canopy for repairs and the lines for fraying. Salt and sun age this equipment fast, so ask how it was stored.
